The Qualitons

Panoramic Tymes

The story of The Qualitons began in 2007 when DJ/producer Kanada Káosz was invited to DJ at the Berlin Soul Ascension Festival (SAF). When he saw some of the greatest funk/soul/beat bands playing at the SAF (incl. The Soul Investigators, Afrobeat Academy, Whitefield Brothers) he went back to Budapest inspired to organize such a band in Hungary. He went to dozens of concerts to hand-pick musicians for this project.

The band were named after the living memory of the former Hungarian Recording Company „Qualiton” – a record label which existed from the late 50s up to the 70s. At first the band’s repertoire consisted of cover-versions from rare Hungarian 7″ singles but soon started to write their own songs. They released two 7″ singles on Munich’s Tramp Records and were featured on a compilation entitled Contemporary Funk (TR-9005).

The Qualitons’ first big break through came when Kaosz produced shows with the veteran Hungarian soul-rock singer Kati Kovács. They rehearsed her best songs and went on tour around Hungary. This brought a great deal of attention from the Hungarian media, as this was dubbed by them as « The Comeback of Kati Kovács« . The strength behind Kati’s big comeback was, of course, The Qualitons!

Recently legendary Japanese DJ Muro placed “Mellbimbo” by The Qualitons right at the beginning of his Afro-Funk mixtape Super Afro Funky Breaks. Furthermore in May this year Gil-Scott Heron and his band shared stage with The Qualitons at the Mediawave festival in Szombathely, Hungary. Heron and the guys enjoyed themselves so much that they congratulated The Qualitons personally for their authentic music and great performance.

The band consists of: Barna Szőke – guitar, Mátyás Premecz – Hammond/vocals, Ernő Hock – bass/vocals, Hunor G. Szabó – drums/vocals and Kanada Káosz – tambourine/claps/producer.

The Qualitons will be touring Europe in fall/winter of 2010, promoting their debut album « Panoramic Tymes ». Watch out for upcoming dates in your city!

Prince Rogers Nelson, dit Le kid de Minneapolis, a fait savoir qu’il s’installe à Paris. Pour l’occasion, RIGHTON.FM met ses talonnettes et invite le bon peuple à s’écouter du bon son de Sa majesté, en attendant son prochain concert.

Dans les années 80, on les disait rivaux, lui et Michael Jackson. Prince Rogers Nelson, alias le nain hargneux adepte des voyages intergalactiques via toute substance illicite, « s’opposait » au longiligne de la fratrie Jackson, pas encore à l’époque sous le feu des tribunaux médiatiques.

Pures artifices de journaleux en mal de sensationnel. L’un comme l’autre ont marqué à leur manière, l’histoire de la zique. Et sans se copier. Quand Bambi donnait dans le zombie breakdancer, Prince livrait un mix électrique de funk psychédélique inspiré par le visionnaire guitariste Shuggie Otis et les tontons du genre, Sly Stone et George Clinton.

Pour comprendre, il faut se rappeler ce moment d’anthologie télévisuelle. En 1983, sur les planches du Beverly Theater de Los Angeles, James Brown invite ses deux héritiers à le rejoindre sur scène. Michael Jackson se livre alors à d’improbables enchaînements de danse après avoir déclaré son amour à un Parrain de la soul hilare.

Quant à Prince, déjà à des années-lumières de la Terre à ce moment, il empoigne une guitare, gratte quelques accords puis feule dans le micro avant de quitter la scène en embarquant un lampadaire de la déco… Les paris portaient à l’époque, sur la formule chimique qui s’était glissée jusqu’aux narines du Jobard génial, lui faisant plomber l’ambiance.

Né le 7 juin 1958 à Minneapolis (Minesota), Prince Rogers Nelson est un musicien (il joue de la batterie, de la basse, du piano, du clavier, des percussions et chante !), acteur et producteur. Sa carrière débutée en 1978 se poursuit avec brio depuis. Parsemée qu’elle est d’albums, de récompenses, de productions (notamment pour Larry Graham, George Clinton et pas mal d’amazones aussi belles que talentueuses comme Sheila E, Vanity et d’autres…) de changements de noms, de films, de records de ventes, d’embrouilles avec les maisons de disques et de concerts mémorables, de conversion au mouvement des Témoins de Jéhovah (sur les conseils de Larry Graham).

Le mieux, pour s’y retrouver, est encore de fouiner dans la discographie du gars, qui est loin, très loin, d’être à la ramasse côté pépites…

Miles had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite Mcs to develop custom vocals for some of his productions. Ninja Tune recording artist, BluRum13. A vocal acrobat who has traveled the globe spreading his signature sound and flow. Known worldwide for his hip-hop productions, Miles decided to overlay his voice onto a deep house jam, and ‘Makin’ Sense’ was born.

A track featuring some soulful organ sweeps, lush keys and a steady rhythm sure to work up a sweat on any dancefloor. Inspired by such names as Harley&Muscle, Kerri Chandler and Dj Spinna. All producers who know how to create an atmosphere where driving rhythms can coincide with deep and soulful melodies.

‘Makin’ Sense’ is about taking the time to understand. Understand ourselves, our life and perspective of things. A deep reflection poetically expressed by BluRum13.

THE QUEST FOR OLORUN

The inspiration for this track came from desire to pursue a deeper understanding of spirituality. As a child, religion and faith was sidelined to things such as hockey and music… Come to think of it, hockey and music were my religion! In hockey, I had faith that with an honest effort I could accomplish anything and be like my idols in the HABS, and in music I had faith that no matter what happened, music would always be there through good or rough times, and let me tell you, there were many rough times. To be honest, if it wasn’t for music, I probably wouldn’t be typing this…

Now, an adult, I have experienced many scenarios and have come to believe that a life without spirituality is futile. For me, it is something that resonates on several levels and guides me to a better understanding of my time here. This said, the title ‘The Quest For Olorun’ has a personal meaning in regards to my trek through the discoveries of my enlightened perceptions. Just as I like my music, I try to live my life… Deep.

Music wise, I am always looking for a balance between organic and electronic sounds to create a harmony that includes the best of two worlds. The rich, fluid and natural elements of organic instrumentation and the relentless, surgical and driving elements of electronic music production. For this track I focused on Latin and African organic rhythms and percussions infused with synthesized melodies and basslines. Some would say on the electronic ancestral house tip.

When it comes to laying tracks down, I usually do things solo and in this case all instruments were written, played and recorded by me. I search to create themes or tell a story with my songs even when they are instrumental and I feel that ‘The Quest For Olorun’ does just that. A journey to the minds eye for those who are willing to listen and not hear, to appreciate and not overlook, to discover and not disregard.
